Yes, I do hope the Google Art Project and other online art resources inspire people to learn more about art, and maybe even try making it themselves!

We're all so used to previewing or researching things online these days--be it clothes, books, or movies--that I think it is imperative for museums to join the fray--or if they have outlets already like the VMC, maybe promote them better.

I guess that's what the big social media push is about.. Tho in mu opinion a little old fashioned advertising never hurt either in terms of reaching the yet unconverted.

We'll see!

(And apologies for any typos, I'm on the go at the moment.)Leah Sandalshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13586221448338828889noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7342911384518459004.post-91162422741258994972011-02-18T01:25:33.879-05:002011-02-18T01:25:33.879-05:00I love it.

It just seemed a bit hard to navigate. Of course, this can be said of many websites... but I hope that in future it will be less so in the Canadian art world.Leah Sandalshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13586221448338828889noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7342911384518459004.post-15950635172073953102011-02-17T10:50:05.627-05:002011-02-17T10:50:05.627-05:00Hi Leah,

I'm glad you included these notes as well; they pose some difficult questions.

While I haven't really formed an opinion on Google Art Project, I'm very much with Freitag on the galleries-jumping-on-the-social-media-bandwagon thing.. as someone who really believes in its power, it's frustrating to see social media not being taken seriously as a tool (would be a useful tool for getting people out to the galleries, especially.)

The other point I find interesting is that many people seem to be lauding Google Art Project as if it hadn't already been done by institutions themselves. The site you point out and are linking to are fairly powerful and useful but are not always well-publicized. I wish they tooted their own horns a bit more!

And I'm glad to hear NGC is updating its website.. it's needed almost as badly as the Power Plant! Incidentally, I believe PP's new website is being done by the same group that worked on Textile Museum's much-praised Social Fabric site...

-ElenaAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
